A Film Never Made

Who:  Gregg Mitman, Emmanuel Urey

What can the past offer about the future?  This project aims to repurpose the historical scientific record in the service of the present. The motion picture record they left behind is the earliest film footage of Liberia’s past to survive a 14-year brutal civil war.

The resulting products—a documentary film and public history website—offer opportunities to engage with Liberia’s indigenous past in an effort to envision a new, inclusive future. The documentary film seeks to connect a younger generation of Liberians with older generations to ask what can the past offer a nation seeking reconciliation when a new generation faces cultural loss and land insecurity.
